why alabaster for a Mumbai apartment.

In a compact flat every fixture is close to you, so the light source matters more than anywhere else. Alabaster has no visible lamp. Light passes through the full thickness of the stone and the whole form glows, which removes the glare that a clear glass pendant or an exposed filament puts at eye level in a small room.

The stone is a translucent gypsum from Aragon in Spain. When lit, its clouding, veins and mineral density become part of the light, and no two blocks are alike. Each stone is reviewed unlit and lit, and multi-part pieces are matched for colour, clouding and transmission, so a pair of bedside sconces reads as a pair.

Mumbai evenings are long and warm, and alabaster at 2700K matches them. Dimmed low it looks like a candle inside stone, which is the mood a sea-facing living room wants after the hard western light has gone.

The honest note is water. Alabaster is soft and dislikes it, so the stone stays indoors, off open balconies and away from windows left open to sea spray in the monsoon. Inside a ventilated or air-conditioned flat it is fine; wipe any condensation with a dry cloth and never use sprays.

The Essenzo Pendant is a domed alabaster shade in Small or Medium, the right scale for a four-seater table or a kitchen counter in a flat. It hides the lamp completely, so it can hang at 1.5 m from the floor over a table without a glare point in the room.

The Alabaster Aura Suspension is a disc-shaped pendant, so it reads wide rather than tall and keeps its visual mass close to the ceiling. It suits a dining table in a room where height is short but width is not.

At the bedside, the Essenzo Dome Wall Sconce is 27 cm high, 12 cm wide and 20 cm deep (10.75 by 4.75 by 8 in) in Satin Brass, taking one E27 lamp of 25 W maximum at 2700K. Hardwired at 100 to 120 cm from the floor, it frees a narrow bedside table entirely.

The Totem Table Lamp stacks alabaster forms 49 cm tall on a 22 cm footprint (19.3 by 8.5 in), with an 8 W LED at 2000K, 2300K or 3000K. On a console or a desk it adds a second layer of light without a single hole in the ceiling.

The Pebble Lamp, a hand-sculpted body in black or white Gorara stone holding a lit alabaster shade, comes in three sizes. The smallest sits on a bedside or a console; the dark body suits the deep tones many Mumbai interiors favour.
