How High to Hang a Pendant Light Over a Dining Table

The 75 to 90 cm rule, a drop table by ceiling height, what a false ceiling changes, one piece or a row by table shape, and dimming for dinner.

Teeshaa Studio6 min read

Hang the pendant so its lowest point sits 75 to 90 cm (30 to 35 in) above the dining table top. That is the short answer to how high to hang a pendant light over a dining table, and it holds for a single pendant, a cluster, a linear piece or a ring. The rest of this guide covers what changes it: a low false ceiling, a long table, where the ceiling point sits, and how to light a dinner rather than a kitchen.

In brief

  • 75 to 90 cm from the tabletop to the bottom of the pendant. Use the lower end with 2.6 to 2.7 m ceilings, the upper end at 3 m and above.
  • Centre the piece on the table, not on the room.
  • Width: one half to two thirds of the table's width for a round piece; about two thirds of the length for a linear piece.
  • A 2.6 m finished ceiling under a cove still works; only the rod gets shorter.
  • Dim it. Dinner wants a fraction of full output, at 2700K or warmer.
  • Teeshaa pendants hang on stainless rods cut to size, so the drop is set before the piece arrives.

How high should a pendant hang over a dining table?

Set the underside of the pendant 75 to 90 cm above the table surface. With a standard 75 cm high table, that puts the bottom of the piece 150 to 165 cm from the floor: above the sightline of seated guests, low enough that the light belongs to the table and not the ceiling. Measure from the tabletop, never from the floor or the slab.

Below 75 cm a pendant blocks faces across the table and glares at anyone standing. Above 90 cm the pool of light spreads thin and the stone reads as a ceiling fitting. Within the range, let the ceiling decide.

Finished ceiling height Pendant bottom above a 75 cm table Pendant bottom from floor Ceiling to pendant bottom
2.6 m (8 ft 6 in) 75 to 80 cm 150 to 155 cm 105 to 110 cm
2.7 m (8 ft 10 in) 75 to 85 cm 150 to 160 cm 110 to 120 cm
3.0 m (9 ft 10 in) 80 to 90 cm 155 to 165 cm 135 to 145 cm
3.6 m (11 ft 10 in) and above 85 to 90 cm 160 to 165 cm 195 cm and more

The last column is the number the workshop needs: rod length plus the height of the pendant body. On a tall ceiling a cluster or a vertical composition fills the space better than a single flat form.

Does a false ceiling change the rule?

No. Measure from the finished ceiling, the cove, not the concrete slab above it. A Bangalore or Mumbai apartment with a 2.85 m slab and a 25 cm false ceiling has a 2.6 m finished ceiling, and the pendant bottom still belongs 150 to 155 cm from the floor. The only thing that changes is the length of the rod: about 105 to 110 cm, pendant included.

Low ceilings favour compact pendants. A domed Essenzo Pendant in its Small size, a 20 cm Lunar sphere or a slim Linea column keeps the body short so the rod can still be seen as a line. The LED driver can sit in the cove above the canopy.

Should the pendant be centred on the table or the room?

On the table. A dining table is rarely centred in its room, and the pendant exists to light the table, so it sits over the table's centre even if that is off centre to the walls. The eye forgives an off-centre canopy; it does not forgive a pendant over one end of the table.

Decide the table's position first and set the ceiling point to it. If the point is already fixed and wrong by 20 to 30 cm, a longer canopy plate or a short swag to a hook can correct it; beyond that, move the point before the false ceiling closes.

One pendant or a row?

Let the table shape decide.

  • Round or square table, 100 to 150 cm: one piece, one half to two thirds of the table's width. A ring, a disc chandelier or a small cluster.
  • Rectangular table, 180 to 240 cm: a linear piece about two thirds of the table's length, or two or three pendants spaced 60 to 75 cm between centres, each kept 15 cm or more inside the table's ends.
  • Rectangular table beyond 240 cm: a long linear suspension, or two separate pieces centred over each half.
  • Square six- to eight-seater, 150 cm and above: a cluster of three to five pendants at staggered heights, all within the 75 to 90 cm band at the lowest.

Dimming and colour temperature for dinner

A dining room is two rooms: homework and bills under full light, dinner under a fraction of it. Specify dimming when you order. Teeshaa pieces are 2700K as standard, which reads like evening light; the Aura Chandelier is offered at 2000K, 2300K or 3000K. For a room used mostly in the evening, 2300K is candle-like and flatters food, faces and the stone itself.

Alabaster dims beautifully. At low output the piece looks like a lit candle inside stone, and the clouding and veins of the block become the pattern of the light. Add a pair of discreet downlights on a separate circuit for working light at the table rather than asking one pendant to do both jobs. There is more on this in better moments, not more lights.

Teeshaa pieces for a dining table

For a round table of 150 to 180 cm, or a square eight-seater, the Aura Chandelier is the natural fit: about 100 cm wide and 91 cm high, radial alabaster shades on a circular frame, with 2000K, 2300K or 3000K to choose from. It is made to order on enquiry.

For a rectangular table of 180 to 240 cm, the Essenzo Linear Suspension P4 runs four domed diffusers along a bar and lights the length evenly. The Essenzo Pendant Cluster P5, 112 cm wide with five domes on E27 lamps at 2700K, suits a square or generous round table where you want the light to have depth. For a table of 120 cm, the 60 cm Halo Crown ring is ready to order and hangs on wire cut to the room. The full pendant collection lists single pendants, clusters and linear pieces together.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Hanging at walkway height. A pendant at 2.1 m clearance sits 135 cm above the table and lights the ceiling more than the plates. Over a table nobody walks under it; use 75 to 90 cm.
  • Measuring before the false ceiling is in. A 25 cm cove shortens the rod by 25 cm. Give the workshop the finished height, or wait until the cove is closed to confirm.
  • Choosing a piece wider than the table minus 30 cm. It overhangs the chairs and gets knocked as people stand. Half to two thirds of the width is the range.
  • Skipping dimming. A dining pendant that only runs at full output is used less. Ask for it at the time of order; adding it later means opening the canopy.

Questions people ask

How high should a chandelier be above a dining table with a 10 ft ceiling?

The rule does not move with the ceiling: the bottom of the chandelier still sits 75 to 90 cm above the table, so 150 to 165 cm from the floor with a 75 cm table. A 10 ft (3 m) ceiling simply means a longer drop, about 135 to 145 cm from ceiling to the lowest point.

Should a dining room pendant be dimmable?

Yes. A dining room is used at full brightness for tasks and at a fraction of it for meals, and one fixed level serves neither. Specify dimming at the time of order so the driver is matched to it.

How wide should a pendant be over a dining table?

For a round or square table, one half to two thirds of the table's width, and never wider than the table minus 30 cm. For a rectangular table, a linear piece about two thirds of the length, or a row of pendants spaced 60 to 75 cm apart and kept 15 cm inside the ends.

See the pieces together on our dining room lighting page. Alabaster is a soft stone and lives above a table where hands and steam reach it, so read the Care guide before the piece goes up.
