Chandelier Size Guide for Indian Living Rooms
The length-plus-width rule for Indian room sizes, how low a chandelier can hang under 2.7 m, sharing a ceiling with a fan, and scale against the sofa.
The quickest way to find the right chandelier size for a living room is to add the room's length and width in feet and read the answer in inches. A 12 by 14 ft room (3.6 by 4.2 m) gives 26 in, so a chandelier about 65 cm across. Indian living rooms add two complications the rule does not cover: a ceiling that often finishes at 2.6 to 2.8 m once the false ceiling is in, and a fan that already owns the centre of it. This guide works through all three.
In brief
- Diameter: room length plus width in feet, read as inches. 4 by 5 m (13 by 16 ft) gives about 75 cm.
- Over a seating group in an open plan, size to the sofa and coffee table, not the whole floor.
- Height: at least 2.1 m (7 ft) from floor to the underside where people walk; about 2 m over a coffee table nobody walks under.
- Under a 2.7 m ceiling that leaves 60 cm for the whole fixture, so choose flat forms: a ring or a disc.
- With a ceiling fan, move the chandelier off centre over the seating, or use a horizontal piece along the sofa.
- Teeshaa sizes: Halo rings 60, 80, 100 and 120 cm; Aura Chandelier about 100 cm; Vanta Halo 80 cm horizontal.
What size chandelier for a living room?
Add the room's length and width in feet; the sum, in inches, is a comfortable diameter. A 4 by 5 m living room is about 13 by 16 ft, which gives 29 in, roughly 75 cm, so an 80 cm ring sits well. A 5.5 by 7.5 m villa living room gives 43 in, about 110 cm, which is a 100 or 120 cm piece. The table below runs the rule for common Indian room sizes and matches them to real Teeshaa diameters.
| Room size | In feet | Length plus width | Diameter | Teeshaa fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.6 x 4.2 m | 12 x 14 ft | 26 | about 65 cm | Halo Crown or Ring Style 1, 60 cm |
| 4.2 x 4.8 m | 14 x 16 ft | 30 | about 75 cm | Halo 80 cm, or Vanta Halo 80 cm horizontal |
| 4.5 x 6.0 m | 15 x 20 ft | 35 | about 90 cm | Aura Chandelier 100 cm, or Halo 80 to 100 cm |
| 5.5 x 7.5 m | 18 x 25 ft | 43 | about 110 cm | Halo 100 or 120 cm, or Halo Infinia 4 ft |
| 6 x 8 m, double height | 20 x 26 ft | 46 | 115 cm, with vertical depth | Halo Infinia or a vertical composition |
Two adjustments. In an open plan, measure the seating zone only: sofa to sofa, or rug edge to rug edge. And let the ceiling nudge the result: a 2.6 m room takes the smaller of two candidate sizes, a 3.2 m room the larger.

How low can a chandelier hang in a 2.7 m living room?
In a room where people walk beneath it, the underside stays at 2.1 m from the floor, which in a 2.7 m room leaves exactly 60 cm for canopy, wire and fixture together. Over a coffee table that nobody crosses, the underside can come down to about 2 m, so 70 cm of fixture. Below that the piece starts to loom over anyone standing up from the sofa.
This is why flat forms suit Indian apartments. A Halo ring is a 4 cm tube; hung on short wire, the whole assembly stays shallow and leaves 2.1 m clear beneath a 2.7 m ceiling. A tiered or tall chandelier of 80 or 90 cm needs a 3 m finished ceiling to hang at the same clearance. From a sofa, eyes at about 110 to 120 cm, a ring at 2 m is seen from below as a glowing band.
Measure after the false ceiling is in. A 2.9 to 3.0 m slab commonly finishes at 2.65 to 2.75 m with a cove, where the LED driver can sit.
Can a chandelier and a ceiling fan share a living room?
Yes, as long as they do not share the centre. A fan at the middle of the ceiling and a chandelier hung off centre over the seating group is the usual answer, because a chandelier belongs over the sofas, not the geometric centre of the room. Keep the fixture well outside the blade sweep, and never where blades pass between it and a seated viewer; the strobing shadow is the real problem.
Three other ways to resolve it. A horizontal piece such as the 80 cm Vanta Halo hung along the sofa wall takes the fan's centre out of the equation. In a long living-dining room, give the fan the sitting half and the chandelier the dining half. Or skip the chandelier, and let a pair of alabaster wall lights and a table lamp carry the room; our alabaster chandelier page covers the options in more depth.
Scale against the sofa and coffee table
When the chandelier hangs over a seating group, the furniture is the second check after the room. Aim for a piece no wider than the coffee table and no narrower than half its length; a 120 cm table takes a 60 to 120 cm chandelier. Centre it on the table, not the sofa, and let the canopy sit wherever that puts it on the ceiling.
Alabaster changes the visual weight. A ring of stone 4 cm thick, or a disc chandelier with open space between its shades, reads lighter than a tiered fixture of the same diameter, so the upper end of a size range usually looks right. Lit, the clouding and veins of the block appear through the light and the eye reads texture rather than size.

Teeshaa chandeliers by room size
For living rooms up to about 4.5 by 5 m with a 2.6 to 2.8 m finished ceiling, the Halo Crown Chandelier is the piece: a continuous ring on a 4 cm tube, 60 cm ready to order, 80, 100 and 120 cm made to order, hung on stainless wire cut to the room so the underside lands exactly at 2.1 m. The Essenzo Ring Suspension is the softer, domed alternative in the same spirit, ready to order.
For rooms of 4.5 by 6 m and above with a 3 m ceiling, the Aura Chandelier gives about 100 cm of width and 91 cm of height, radial alabaster shades on a circular frame, with 2000K, 2300K or 3000K to choose from; it is made to order on enquiry. Where a fan holds the centre, the Vanta Halo Chandelier Horizontal runs 80 cm of lit stone along the sofa instead. Every piece in the chandelier collection is cut from Spanish alabaster, so no two are alike.
Mistakes to avoid
- Sizing to the whole open-plan floor. A 9 m living-dining run gives a huge number that no seating group can carry. Measure the seating zone.
- Buying a tall fixture for a 2.7 m ceiling. With 2.1 m clearance there are only 60 cm to play with. Choose a ring or a disc, or accept a lower underside over a coffee table only.
- Centring on the ceiling when the fan is already there. Hang over the seating instead; the room will read as deliberate, not compromised.
- Forgetting dimming. A living room chandelier is at full output for perhaps an hour a week. Specify dimming at the time of order.
Questions people ask
What size chandelier for a 12 by 12 living room?
A 12 by 12 ft room (3.6 by 3.6 m) gives 24 in, so about 60 cm across. A 60 cm Halo ring is the direct fit, and it does not feel small in a room that size.
How high should a chandelier hang in a living room?
Keep the underside at least 2.1 m (7 ft) from the floor wherever people walk, and about 2 m over a coffee table nobody crosses. In a 2.7 m room that means a fixture, wire and canopy no deeper than 60 to 70 cm in total.
Is a 100 cm chandelier too big for a living room?
Not for a room of about 4.5 by 6 m (15 by 20 ft) or larger with a 3 m ceiling. In a 4 by 4 m room with a 2.7 m ceiling it will crowd the space; a 60 or 80 cm ring is the better answer there.
