Living Room Chandeliers

A living room chandelier in India has to answer to three things at once: a ceiling that often finishes at 2.6 to 3 m, a fan that may already hold the centre, and a room that is used from the sofa, seated, every evening. why alabaster for a living room.

A living room chandelier is seen from below and from a seat, which means the underside is the piece. In most fixtures that is where the lamps are. In alabaster there is no lamp to see; the light comes through the stone, and the clouding, veins and density of the block are what the eye reads from the sofa. A ring of stone at 2 m is a glowing band, not a cluster of bulbs.

In daylight the same piece is a pale, dense, sculptural object. Stone holds the room during the day as well, which matters in a space used from morning to midnight.

Every block is different. We review each one unlit and lit, and for a piece with many parts, the shades of an Aura or the rings of an Infinia, the stone is matched for colour, clouding and light transmission so the whole reads as one. Even so, no two chandeliers we make are the same.

The trade-offs are plain. Alabaster is soft and is dusted, never washed. It costs more than glass or metal. The larger pieces are made to order and take a few weeks. In return you get a central light that can run at a candle's output all evening and still be the thing people look at.

• Diameter: add the room's length and width in feet and read the sum as inches. A 4 by 5 m room gives about 75 cm; 5.5 by 7.5 m gives about 110 cm. In an open plan, measure the seating zone only.
• Clearance: the underside at least 2.1 m from the floor where people walk, about 2 m over a coffee table nobody crosses. Measure the finished ceiling after the cove is in.
• Form by ceiling: under 2.8 m, flat forms, a ring or a disc, so the whole fixture sits within 60 cm. At 3 m and above, the Aura Chandelier's 91 cm height and the taller compositions come into play.
• Fans: if the fan holds the centre, hang the chandelier off centre over the seating, or run a horizontal piece along the sofa wall. Keep well clear of the blade sweep.
• Light: 2700K as standard; the Aura Chandelier also offers 2000K, 2300K or 3000K. Ask for dimming at the time of order and add discreet downlights or wall lights for the brighter hour.
• Finish: canopy and fittings are a small part of a stone piece. Match them to door hardware and the fan. Finishes vary by piece.

The Halo Crown Chandelier is the apartment living room piece: a continuous ring of alabaster on a 4 cm tube, 60 cm ready to order, 80, 100 and 120 cm made to order, on stainless wire cut to the room so the underside lands exactly where you want it. The Halo Ring Chandelier Style 1 offers the same four diameters.

The Aura Chandelier is for living rooms of 4.5 by 6 m and above with a 3 m ceiling: about 100 cm wide and 91 cm high, radial alabaster shades on a circular frame, with 2000K, 2300K or 3000K to choose from. Made to order on enquiry.

The Vanta Halo Chandelier Horizontal runs 80 cm of lit stone in a line, for rooms where a fan keeps the centre of the ceiling and the chandelier moves to the sofa wall. The Lunar Branch Style 1 sets hand-carved alabaster spheres on branching arms, for villa living rooms with height to spare that want an object rather than a geometry. The 60 cm Halo Crown, Halo Ring Style 1 and the Essenzo Ring Suspension are ready to order online, with the wire cut to the drop you give. Finishes vary by piece. Halo Crown offers Champagne Gold, Brass Gold, Black and White; Vanta Halo and Infinia offer Matte White, Brushed Brass, Antique Brass, Champagne Gold and Matte Black. Light sources are integrated LED on most pieces, LED strip or E27 on Halo Crown, 2700K as standard with dimming on request. Drivers sit remote or in the canopy, and every wire and rod is cut to your room before dispatch.

My living room has a ceiling fan. Where does the chandelier go?

Off centre, over the seating group, with the fan keeping the middle of the ceiling. Keep the fixture well outside the blade sweep. Alternatively, hang the 80 cm Vanta Halo horizontal along the sofa wall, or in a long living-dining room give the fan one half and the chandelier the other.

Can I dim the chandelier?

Yes. Dimming is available on request on every piece and is best specified when you order so the driver is matched. Most pieces are 2700K; the Aura Chandelier offers 2000K, 2300K or 3000K. At low output the stone looks like a candle inside alabaster, which is how a living room is used most evenings.
