How Many Pendants Over a Kitchen Island, and How Far Apart

Pendant count by island length, 60 to 75 cm spacing, 75 to 90 cm above the counter, task light, grease and steam, and which alabaster pendants suit a row.

Two pendants for an island up to 1.5 m long, three for 1.8 to 2.4 m, and a linear piece or four to five slim pendants beyond that. Space them 60 to 75 cm between centres, keep the end pendants at least 15 cm inside the island's ends, and hang the bottoms 75 to 90 cm above the counter. That answers how many pendants over a kitchen island; the rest of this guide is the arithmetic, the exceptions, and what cooking does to stone.

In brief

  • Count: 2 pendants up to 1.5 m, 3 for 1.8 to 2.4 m, a linear piece or 4 to 5 slim pendants over 2.4 m.
  • Spacing: 60 to 75 cm between centres, with the gap between pendant bodies at least as wide as a body.
  • Ends: keep the outer pendants 15 cm or more inside the island's ends.
  • Height: pendant bottoms 75 to 90 cm above the counter, so 160 to 180 cm from the floor over a 90 cm worktop.
  • Pendants give ambient light; add downlights or under-cabinet strips for chopping.
  • Keep stone pendants off the hob zone; grease and steam are the enemies of alabaster, not heat.

How many pendants do you need over a kitchen island?

Divide the island's length by 60 to 75 cm and round to the nearest whole number that leaves 15 cm or more at each end. For most Indian kitchens that gives two pendants on a 1.2 to 1.5 m island, three on 1.8 to 2.4 m, and three to four, or a single linear piece, on anything longer. Odd numbers sit more easily because one pendant marks the centre.

Island length Pendants Spacing between centres Placement
1.2 to 1.5 m (4 to 5 ft) 2 60 to 75 cm centres at one quarter and three quarters of the length
1.8 to 2.4 m (6 to 8 ft) 3 60 to 75 cm middle pendant on the island's centre
2.4 to 3.0 m (8 to 10 ft) 3 to 4, or one linear piece 65 to 75 cm slim columns allow four; wide domes stay at three
over 3 m (10 ft) linear piece, or 4 to 5 slim pendants 70 to 75 cm or two groups centred over each half

A worked example. An island 2.1 m long takes three pendants at 70 cm centres: one on the centre line at 105 cm, the others at 35 cm and 175 cm from one end. Each outer pendant sits 35 cm inside the end, comfortably past the 15 cm minimum. A 1.5 m island takes two at 75 cm centres, at 37.5 cm and 112.5 cm.

A Linea column is 6 cm wide, which lets a row of them sit closer than domed or spherical pendants.

How far apart should island pendants be?

Sixty to 75 cm between centres, and never so close that the bodies nearly touch: the gap between two pendants should be at least as wide as one pendant. A 6 cm Linea column can sit at 60 cm centres with air to spare; a 25 cm Lunar sphere at 60 cm centres leaves a 35 cm gap, which is the lower limit before the row reads as one lump.

Do not try to match the stool count. Three stools and two pendants, or four stools and three pendants, is normal; the pendants answer to the island's length, the stools to its width. If the island has a sink or a hob at one end, shift the whole row towards the seating or preparation end rather than stretching it over the wet or hot zone.

How high should pendants hang above a kitchen counter?

Set the bottom of each pendant 75 to 90 cm (30 to 35 in) above the worktop. Indian worktops are usually 85 to 90 cm high, so the pendant bottoms land 160 to 180 cm from the floor. Aim for the upper half of that range if people stand and talk across the island, so nobody's view is cut by a glowing stone at eye level.

Under a 2.6 m finished ceiling, the rod plus pendant body comes to about 80 to 100 cm. Teeshaa pendants hang on stainless rods cut to size, with the total drop set when you order; the Alabaster Linea Pendant, for instance, goes to a maximum drop of 178 cm (70 in). Give the workshop the finished ceiling height after the false ceiling is in and the worktop height, and the rods arrive right.

Task light, heat and steam

Alabaster pendants are ambient light. The stone diffuses everything, which is what makes it beautiful and what makes it the wrong tool for reading a knife edge. Put a pair of 90+ CRI downlights or an under-cabinet strip on a separate switch for chopping, and let the pendants carry the room at 2700K the rest of the time.

Heat from cooking is not the problem; alabaster is stone. Grease and steam are. A pendant directly above a hob collects a film that cannot be cleaned with degreasers, because alabaster is a soft gypsum that harsh chemicals and water damage. If the hob is on the island, hang the stone over the seating or preparation end, fit a proper extractor, and wipe the pendants monthly with a soft dry cloth as the Care guide describes. An island with a sink or no appliance at all is the ideal home for stone.

The domed Essenzo Pendant in Small suits low ceilings; three in a row cover a 2 m island.

Teeshaa pendants for a kitchen island

The Alabaster Linea Pendant is the piece drawn for this position: a single block of alabaster carved into a column 30 cm tall and 6 cm wide, integrated LED at 2700K, on a rod cut to size. Three columns at 65 cm centres over a 2 m island read as one calm line. If you want a single canopy and one ceiling point, the Linea Pendant P5 gathers five columns as one cluster, which also solves an island where the slab has a single outlet.

For a softer form, the Essenzo Pendant is a domed shade in Small or Medium; use Small under 2.7 m ceilings. The Lunar Pendant is a hand-carved sphere in 20 cm or 25 cm, in Champagne Gold, Brass Gold, Black or White fittings; two or three 20 cm spheres suit a 1.5 to 2 m island. Every one of these is cut from its own block, so the clouding and veins differ from pendant to pendant even in a matched row, which is the point. The full Linea series and the alabaster pendant lights page show the rest.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Fixing the ceiling points before choosing the pendants. A 6 cm column and a 25 cm sphere want different spacing. Choose the piece, then mark the points, then close the false ceiling.
  • Hanging pendants at head height to look dramatic. Below 160 cm from the floor they block the view across the island and get knocked. Keep bottoms at 160 to 180 cm.
  • Putting stone directly over a hob. Grease film on alabaster cannot be scrubbed off. Shift the row to the prep or seating end.
  • Using the pendants as the only kitchen light. Diffused stone is for atmosphere. Add downlights on a separate switch for cooking.

Questions people ask

Should kitchen island pendants be odd or even in number?

Odd numbers sit more easily because one pendant marks the island's centre, but two pendants are correct for an island up to 1.5 m. Let length decide the count and spacing decide the rest; an even row that is well spaced beats an odd row that is cramped.

Can I use one large pendant over an island?

Over a short island of 1.2 m or less, yes, centred, with the same 75 to 90 cm clearance above the counter. Over anything longer, one piece leaves the ends dark. A linear suspension gives the single-canopy look while lighting the full length.

What colour temperature for kitchen island pendants?

2700K for the pendants, which reads as warm evening light through alabaster, with downlights at 2700K or 3000K and 90+ CRI for task work. Avoid 4000K and cooler over an island; it turns the stone grey and the food with it.

See the pieces side by side on our kitchen island pendant lights page. If the island runs into a dining table, our dining room lighting guide covers how the two rows relate, and the linear pendant lights page covers single-canopy pieces for long islands.
