Kitchen island pendant lights are seen more than any other light in the house: from the sofa, from the dining table, from the front door in an open plan. Teeshaa makes slim columns, domed shades and hand-carved spheres in Spanish alabaster for this row, designed in Bangalore and made in our own facilities in India, each on a stainless rod cut to your counter and ceiling. Most island pendants are ready to order online; multi-pendant canopies and longer compositions can be made to order.
why alabaster for a kitchen island.
An island row is in the sightline all day, lit and unlit. Unlit, an alabaster pendant is a pale, dense, sculptural object with a surface that catches daylight. Lit, the stone turns inside out: clouding, veins and the mineral density of that particular block appear as the pattern of the light. Few materials look right in both states; stone does.
In an open-plan kitchen the pendants hang at the eye level of someone standing at the counter, and people sit at the island facing them for a meal. A bare or clear-glass pendant at that height is a point of glare. Alabaster has no hot spot at all; the light is the whole surface, so nobody squints across the island.
Each pendant is cut from its own block, so a row of three is three different stones. We review each block unlit and lit and match the row for colour, clouding and light transmission so it reads as one family, not one copy. The small differences between them are what make the row look carved rather than moulded.
Two honest notes. Alabaster is a soft stone that dislikes water and chemicals, so it belongs over the seating or preparation end of the island, not above a hob, and it is dusted rather than washed. And it costs more than glass or metal. In exchange, it is the one row of lights in the house that people walk up to.
choosing kitchen island pendant lights.
- Count: two pendants up to 1.5 m of island, three for 1.8 to 2.4 m, three to four slim columns or one linear piece beyond that.
- Spacing: 60 to 75 cm between centres; outer pendants at least 15 cm inside the island's ends. Slim 6 cm columns can sit closer than 25 cm spheres or domes.
- Height: pendant bottoms 75 to 90 cm above the worktop, so 160 to 180 cm from the floor over an Indian counter. Keep to the upper half if people talk across the island.
- Ceiling: under a 2.6 to 2.7 m cove, choose compact bodies, the Linea column, Essenzo Small or the 20 cm Lunar. At 3 m and above the Medium sizes and longer rods come into their own.
- Finish: the rod and canopy are small; match them to the tap and handles rather than making them a feature. Finishes vary by piece.
- Light: 2700K through stone for the pendants, with 90+ CRI downlights or an under-cabinet strip on a separate switch for task work. Ask for dimming at the time of order.
the pieces.
The Alabaster Linea Pendant is the island pendant in its purest form: a column 30 cm tall and 6 cm wide carved from a single block, integrated LED at 2700K, on a rod cut to size up to 178 cm of total drop. Three in a row over a 2 m island is the configuration most kitchens end up with. Ready to order in Small or Medium.
The Alabaster Linea Pendant P5 hangs five columns from a single canopy, for a slab with one outlet or a long island that wants one gesture rather than a row of points. The Essenzo Linear Suspension P4 does the same with four domes on a bar, for islands of 2.4 m and beyond.
The Essenzo Pendant is the domed shade, in Small for low ceilings and Medium for taller rooms; two or three over an island give a softer, rounder line than the columns. The Lunar Pendant is a hand-carved sphere in 20 cm or 25 cm with Champagne Gold, Brass Gold, Black or White fittings, for kitchens that want the row to read as objects rather than lines. The alabaster pendant lights page shows every pendant in the range.
specifying and ordering.
Single pendants in the Linea, Essenzo, Lunar, Lana and Totem series are ready to order online, with the drop specified when you order. Anything beyond the listed sizes is confirmed by enquiry: send the island length, worktop height and finished ceiling height and we return a layout with spacing and rod lengths.
Finishes vary by piece; most pendants offer Champagne Gold, Brass Gold, Black and White for the rod and canopy. Light sources are integrated LED at 2700K on most pieces, with dimming on request and drivers remote or in the canopy. Every rod is cut to your measurements before dispatch.
Lead time is typically 3 to 4 weeks, and we ship worldwide. Kitchen designers and architects can request drawings, finish samples and project terms through the Trade Programme. For an island that needs its own length or a canopy drawn to the slab, see Bespoke. Care is simple and worth reading before installation: the Care page covers it.
frequently asked questions.
How many alabaster pendants do I need over my island?
Two for an island up to 1.5 m, three for 1.8 to 2.4 m, and three to four slim columns or a single linear piece beyond that. Space them 60 to 75 cm between centres and keep the outer pendants at least 15 cm inside the island's ends. Slim Linea columns can sit closer than domed or spherical pendants.
How high should the pendants hang above the counter?
Set the bottom of each pendant 75 to 90 cm above the worktop, which puts it 160 to 180 cm from the floor over a standard Indian counter. Teeshaa pendants hang on stainless rods cut to size, so tell us the finished ceiling height and the counter height and the drop is set before dispatch.
Can alabaster pendants hang over a hob?
We advise against it. Heat is not the problem, grease and steam are: a film settles on the stone and alabaster cannot be cleaned with degreasers or wet scrubbing. Hang the pendants over the seating or preparation end of the island, fit a good extractor, and dust the stone with a soft dry cloth.
Are the pendants bright enough to cook by?
They are ambient light. Alabaster diffuses the source completely, which gives the kitchen its warmth but is not task light. Add downlights or an under-cabinet strip with 90+ CRI on a separate switch for chopping and reading recipes, and let the pendants carry the room at 2700K.
Can I have one ceiling point for several pendants?
Yes. The Alabaster Linea Pendant P5 hangs five columns from a single canopy, and the Essenzo Linear Suspension P4 carries four domes on one bar. Both suit a slab with a single outlet or a false ceiling you would rather not open again.
