Most bedroom lighting ideas start at the ceiling and end with a bright room nobody wants to sleep in. why alabaster for a bedroom.

The bedroom is the one room where you look at a light from 60 cm away, every night, half asleep. Most fixtures are not made for that distance. Alabaster is. Up close the stone shows its clouding and veining through the light, and the piece reads as an object with a history rather than a lamp with a shade.

The light itself is low and warm. A bedside sconce or lamp in alabaster runs at 2700K as standard, and several pieces go to 2000K or 2300K, which is the colour of a candle. Dimmed for the middle of the night, the stone gives just enough light to find a glass of water without waking anyone, and there is no bare source anywhere to catch an eye adjusted to the dark.

A pair of bedside lights is cut from two blocks, each reviewed unlit and lit, and the two will differ in their veining because the stone is natural.

The limits are worth knowing. Alabaster is diffused light, not a reading beam; add a small directional light if one of you reads for an hour while the other sleeps. The stone is soft and is dusted, never washed. And it costs more than fabric or glass. At the bedside, we think it is the right place to spend.

• Bedside wall lights: centre 100 to 120 cm from the floor, about 60 to 75 cm above the mattress top. Set the wall points before plastering, once the bed and tables are chosen.
• Bedside lamps: 45 to 60 cm tall on a 55 to 60 cm table, so the lit stone sits at shoulder height when sitting up. Footprint under 25 cm leaves room for a book and a glass.
• Bedside pendants: for narrow bedsides, a slim column hung with its underside 100 to 125 cm from the floor, on a rod cut to size.
• The room: one soft central piece, a small ring or a single pendant with its underside at 2.1 m where you walk, or none at all if the wall lights carry the room. Many Indian bedrooms share the ceiling with a fan; wall lights avoid the conflict entirely.
• Colour temperature: 2000 to 2300K for sleep, 2700K for reading. Nothing cooler at the bedside.
• Control: each side switched and dimmed independently, reachable from the pillow, with a two-way switch at the door.

The Essenzo Dome Wall Sconce is the bedside wall light: 27 cm high and 12 cm wide, projecting 20 cm, in satin brass with a single E27 lamp of 25 W maximum at 2700K. Hardwired, in Small or Medium, ready to order.

The Aura Wall Mount is a disc of alabaster that sits flatter to the wall and washes a headboard or panelling evenly. Its fittings come in Brushed Brass, Antique Brass, Champagne Gold, Polished Nickel or Brushed Nickel, which makes it the piece to match to existing metalwork.

The Totem Table Lamp stacks alabaster forms to 49 cm on a 22 cm footprint, with an 8 W LED at 2000K, 2300K or 3000K and dimming on request. At 2000K it is among the warmest pieces in the range and a natural bedside lamp. Larger compositions for the room itself, a ring or a cluster over the bed, are confirmed by enquiry with the room dimensions and finished ceiling height.

Finishes vary by piece: the Essenzo Dome sconce is satin brass; the Aura Wall Mount offers five metal finishes; most other pieces come in Champagne Gold, Brass Gold, Black and White. Light sources are integrated LED on most pieces and E27 on the Essenzo Dome sconce. 2700K is standard, 2000K to 3000K on selected pieces, dimming on request. Pendant rods are cut to your drop before dispatch.

What height should bedroom wall lights be mounted at?

Bedside wall lights sit with their centre 100 to 120 cm from the floor, about 60 to 75 cm above the mattress top, so the stone glows at shoulder height when you sit up. Elsewhere in the bedroom, a dressing area or a corridor wall, 150 to 170 cm is the usual centre height. Measure from the mattress, not the frame.

Which colour temperature should I choose for a bedroom?

2000 to 2300K if the room is for winding down; it reads like candlelight through the stone. 2700K if you read in bed most nights. Do I need an electrician for alabaster wall lights?

Yes. The Essenzo Dome Wall Sconce, Aura Wall Mount and Linea Wall Mount are hardwired to a wall point, so the cable runs inside the wall and the point should be set at sconce height before plastering. Table lamps plug in and need nothing. Pendants need a ceiling point above each bedside.

Will a pair of bedside lights match?

Each piece is cut from Spanish alabaster, and every block has its own clouding and veining, so no two are identical. Every block is reviewed unlit and lit before it is cut. If you are ordering a pair for one room, say so when you order so the two can be considered together; the veining will still differ, which is part of the appeal.

Is alabaster safe to touch and clean at the bedside?

Yes, with simple care. Dust it with a soft dry or lightly damp cloth, and keep sprays, polishes and wet wipes away from it; alabaster is a soft gypsum that water and chemicals mark. Switch off before cleaning and follow the care guide supplied with each piece.
