An alabaster table lamp from Teeshaa is a block of Spanish alabaster carved into a stacked column, a dome, a cone or a pebble, lit from inside and set on stone or metal, designed in Bangalore and made in Teeshaa's own facilities in India. Every table lamp in the range is ready to order online, ships worldwide, and arrives typically 3 to 4 weeks after confirmation.
why alabaster for a table lamp.
A table lamp is the one light you live next to. It stands at arm's length on a bedside or a console, and you look at it switched off as often as on. Alabaster gives both states something to offer: unlit, a pale carved object with a soft surface; lit, a glow that comes from inside the stone, with the clouding and veins of that block visible in the light.
Because every block differs, every lamp differs. One Totem may be soft and cloudy through its whole height, the next carry a grey vein across one form. Teeshaa reviews each block unlit and lit before cutting, and the material page explains what is looked for.
The light is low, warm and even, which is what a bedroom or a sitting room wants in the evening. Dimmed, a lamp drops to the glow of a candle inside stone. That is the role to buy it for; a directional reading light handles the page.
choosing an alabaster table lamp.
- Height. 40 to 55 cm (16 to 22 in) on a bedside table of 55 to 65 cm; 50 to 70 cm on a console; 40 to 50 cm on a desk. The glow should sit near the eye level of the person using the room, not above it.
- Footprint. No more than a third of the table top. The Totem stands on a 22 cm footprint; the Pebble comes in three sizes and several Essenzo lamps in two, for narrow tables and shelves.
- Colour temperature. 2000K to 2300K for a bedroom, candle-like; 2700K for warm evening light; 3000K where colours should read truthfully, at a dressing table or a desk. The Totem offers 2000K, 2300K or 3000K.
- Dimming. Available on request. Worth having on any bedside lamp, because the veining comes forward at half output.
- Base and finish. Finishes vary by piece. The Pebble pairs alabaster with black or white Gorara stone; the Essenzo Melange offers Antique-Burnished Brass, Bronze or Polished Nickel.
Keep the lamp on a dry surface away from open windows, basins and kettles, and on a socket you can reach from the bed or the chair.
the pieces.
The Totem Table Lamp stacks alabaster forms in a vertical rhythm, 49 cm tall on a 22 cm footprint (19.3 by 8.5 in), with an 8 W LED at 2000K, 2300K or 3000K and dimming on request. It is the lamp for a console, a sofa side table or a generous bedside, where its height lifts the glow to seated eye level.
The Pebble Lamp is hand-sculpted from black Gorara stone, or white stone, with Spanish alabaster set into it, in three sizes. The dark body makes the lit alabaster read brighter, so the smallest size still carries a shelf or a narrow bedside table.
The Essenzo series gives six domed and rounded table lamps. The Essenzo Table Lamp Style 1 is the simplest form, a soft dome of stone for a bedside. The Essenzo Dome Table Lamp Style 4 gives a wider, lower glow for a side table. The Essenzo Melange Table Lamp Style 2, in Small or Medium with Antique-Burnished Brass, Bronze or Polished Nickel, pairs the stone with metal for a console or desk. The Dot, Cone and Porcini lamps complete the set.
specifying and ordering.
All table lamps are ready to order online. Choose the size where a piece offers one, the colour temperature where offered, and ask for dimming at the time of ordering. Place a socket within reach of the table.
Lead time is typically 3 to 4 weeks, and pieces ship worldwide from India. For hotel guest rooms and project interiors that need many lamps with the natural variation of the stone matched across the set, the trade programme provides samples, project pricing and lead times. For a lamp in a size or form outside the range, the bespoke studio can develop it. Day-to-day, a soft dry cloth is the only care the stone needs; the care guide covers the rest.
frequently asked questions.
How tall should an alabaster bedside lamp be?
40 to 55 cm (16 to 22 in) on a bedside table of 55 to 65 cm, so the glowing part of the lamp sits near your shoulder when you sit up against the pillows. The base should take no more than a third of the table top. The Totem at 49 cm suits a generous table; the Pebble comes in three sizes and several Essenzo lamps in two.
Can I read by an alabaster table lamp?
For a few pages before sleep, yes. For long reading or desk work, no. Alabaster scatters light inside the stone and sends it out evenly in all directions, so little arrives as a focused beam on the page. Most designers pair an alabaster lamp for mood with a small directional reading light, and choose 3000K on the alabaster where colours should read truthfully.
Are alabaster table lamps dimmable?
Dimming is available on request, and on a bedside lamp it is worth having. At full output the stone is bright and even; at half output the clouding and veins come forward and the lamp looks like a candle inside stone. Ask for dimming when you order so the lamp arrives with a compatible driver and control.
How do I clean an alabaster lamp?
Dust it with a soft dry cloth. For a mark, use a barely damp cloth and dry the stone at once. Never spray cleaner onto it, never use anything abrasive, and keep it away from basins, kettles and open windows where rain reaches. Lift the lamp by its base, not the shade, and follow the care guide supplied with the piece.
What is the Pebble lamp made of?
Spanish alabaster set into a hand-sculpted body of Gorara stone, finished in black or white, in three sizes. The alabaster glows when lit; the Gorara stays dark and gives the lamp its weight and contrast. Because both stones are natural, the pattern of each lamp is its own.
For sizes by surface, colour temperature and placement, read how to choose an alabaster table lamp. The bedroom lighting page weighs a lamp against a wall light at the bedside, and the alabaster lighting hub covers chandeliers, pendants and wall lights.
