Can You Use Alabaster Lighting in a Bathroom?

Alabaster belongs at the vanity and dressing area, not above the bath or in the shower. Zones explained, mirror heights, warm light and simple care.

Yes, you can use alabaster lighting in a bathroom, with one firm condition: keep the stone out of the splash zones. That means nothing inside or directly above the bath or shower, and a free hand at the vanity, the mirror and the dressing area. Alabaster is a soft gypsum stone that dislikes water and harsh chemicals, so the rest is about ventilation, placement and a sensible cleaning habit.

In brief

  • Alabaster wall lights and pendants belong at the vanity, mirror and dressing area, not in or over the bath or shower.
  • Electricians divide a bathroom into zones 0, 1 and 2 around water; treat the stone piece as a dry-area fixture outside them and get the installation signed off.
  • Flank the mirror with sconces centred 150 to 165 cm (59 to 65 in) from the floor, roughly at eye level.
  • 2700K warm white flatters skin and stone; 3000K if you want a slightly cleaner read for make-up. Ask for dimming.
  • Run the extract fan during and after showers and wipe condensation from the stone with a dry cloth.
  • Clean with a soft dry or lightly damp cloth only. No sprays, no bathroom cleaners.

Is alabaster lighting in a bathroom safe?

Yes, at the vanity and the dressing area, outside the zones your electrician draws around the bath and shower. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower tray, zone 1 is the space directly above them up to about 2.25 m, and zone 2 extends about 60 cm (24 in) sideways from the edge of each. A stone light sits outside zone 2, in the dry part of the room.

In most Indian bathrooms the vanity wall is already the far side of the room from the shower, often behind a glass partition, and that is where the mirror sconces go. In a master suite with a separate dressing room, or a powder room off the foyer, there are no wet zones at all, and a pendant or a pair of wall lights is straightforward.

Treat every Teeshaa piece as a dry-area fixture. Use it where water does not land, and ask your electrician to confirm the zone requirements that apply to your wiring.

Does steam damage alabaster?

Steam alone does not damage alabaster, but condensation that sits on the stone and dries repeatedly will leave marks and, over years, dull the surface. The fix is ventilation and a cloth: run the extract fan during and for 15 to 20 minutes after a hot shower, and wipe any beads of water off the piece with a dry soft cloth.

Alabaster is a fine-grained gypsum, around 2 on the Mohs scale, soft enough to scratch with a fingernail and sensitive to water and acids. Bathroom cleaners, limescale removers and glass sprays are all off limits near the stone. If you cannot keep those products away from the piece, choose a different room for it. This is the honest trade-off: alabaster gives a quality of light glass cannot, and asks for a little care in return.

How high should bathroom wall lights be beside a mirror?

Centre a pair of sconces 150 to 165 cm (59 to 65 in) from the finished floor, so the light sits at eye level and falls evenly on both sides of the face. Place them 20 to 30 cm outside the mirror edges, or on the mirror itself if it is wide, and typically 90 to 110 cm apart for a single basin.

Light from both sides is what makes a face read truthfully. A single light above the mirror throws shadows under the eyes and chin, which is why hotel vanities almost always flank. For a double vanity, place a sconce at each end and one in the middle, or use two vertical columns that light both basins. Keep the sconce projection in mind: the Essenzo Dome Wall Sconce projects 20 cm (8 in), so allow for that against a shallow vanity.

What colour temperature suits a bathroom mirror?

2700K is the usual choice: warm, flattering to skin, and the colour alabaster looks best in. If you apply make-up at the mirror and want a touch more neutrality, 3000K is a reasonable step without turning the room clinical. Avoid anything cooler than that in stone; it flattens the clouding and turns the room grey.

Ask for a CRI of 90 or above so skin and stone render truthfully, and have the circuit dimmed. A bathroom at night wants a fraction of its morning light, and alabaster dimmed low looks like a candle inside stone. Separate switching for the mirror lights and any ceiling downlights gives you both without compromise.

A checklist before you order

  1. Walk the room with your electrician and mark the splash zones around the bath and shower. The stone piece goes outside them.
  2. Confirm the extract fan works and is on a timer or humidity sensor so it keeps running after the shower.
  3. Choose the location: a pair of sconces flanking the mirror, a single wall light in a powder room, or a pendant over a freestanding dressing table.
  4. Set the mounting heights: 150 to 165 cm to centre for mirror sconces; for a pendant, keep the bottom clear of head height and well away from the basin.
  5. Pick the finish against the taps and hardware: nickel for cool, brushed or antique brass for warm, black or white for a quiet frame.
  6. Specify 2700K (or 3000K), CRI 90+, and dimming on request.
  7. Keep bathroom cleaners away from the stone and wipe it with a dry cloth. Read the care guide before the first clean.

Teeshaa pieces for the vanity and dressing room

The Essenzo Dome Wall Sconce is the natural mirror light: 27 cm high, 12 cm wide, projecting 20 cm (10.75 x 4.75 x 8 in), in satin brass, with a single E27 lamp up to 25 W at 2700K that is simple to replace. A pair either side of the mirror is the classic arrangement.

For a quieter form, the Aura Wall Mount is a lit disc of alabaster against the wall, and it is the piece to choose if your taps are nickel: it offers Polished Nickel and Brushed Nickel alongside Brushed Brass, Antique Brass and Champagne Gold.

The Alabaster Linea Wall Mount is a slender vertical column from a single block, which suits a tall narrow gap between a mirror and a wall and lights the face along its full height. In a powder room or over a dressing table away from water, the Lunar Pendant, a hand-carved sphere of 20 or 25 cm, hangs as a single warm point.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Mounting a stone sconce on the shower partition wall because that is where the switch drop is. Fix: move the wiring to the vanity wall; the stone must sit outside the splash zones.
  • Placing a single light above the mirror and wondering why faces look tired. Fix: two lights at eye level, one each side.
  • Spraying glass cleaner at the mirror and letting the mist settle on the alabaster. Fix: spray onto the cloth, not the mirror, and keep that cloth off the stone.
  • Choosing 4000K lamps sold as daylight for the mirror. Stone turns grey and skin turns flat. Fix: 2700K, or 3000K at most.
  • A pendant over the basin at head height. Fix: pendants belong over a dressing table or in a powder room, with the bottom above 2.1 m if anyone walks under it.

Questions people ask

Can alabaster get wet?

Not repeatedly. A wipe with a lightly damp cloth is fine; standing water, splashes and steam condensation that dries on the surface are not. Keep the stone out of the bath and shower zones and wipe condensation away.

Is alabaster lighting safe in a bathroom?

Yes, in the dry area at the vanity, mirror and dressing table, installed by an electrician who confirms the zone rules. Not inside or above the bath or shower. Ventilate and clean with a dry cloth.

How do you clean alabaster in a bathroom?

Soft dry cloth for dust, lightly damp cloth for marks, nothing else. No bathroom cleaners, limescale removers or abrasive pads, and keep sprays away from the stone when you clean the mirror.

See the sconces and pendants that suit a vanity on the alabaster bathroom lighting page, and read how the stone behaves and is cared for on the Material page. For mounting heights in other rooms, see the wall sconce height guide and the range of alabaster wall lights.
