Alabaster bathroom lighting works in the dry part of the room: at the vanity, flanking the mirror, over a dressing table or in a powder room, away from the bath and shower. Teeshaa makes wall lights and small pendants in Spanish alabaster for exactly these positions, designed in Bangalore and made in-house in India. Most of the wall pieces are ready to order online; the ring wall mounts are made to order by enquiry.
why alabaster for a bathroom.
A mirror wants light that is soft, even and warm, from both sides of the face. Alabaster does this by nature. The lamp sits inside the stone and the whole surface glows, so there is no hot spot in the mirror and no glare at the edge of your vision.
Warm light flatters skin, and 2700K in stone is warm without being yellow. Dimmed down at night, an alabaster sconce looks like a candle inside stone, which is the right amount of light for a bathroom at midnight.
Every piece is a different block. Clouding and fine veins show when the piece is lit; each block is reviewed unlit and lit before it is cut, and two sconces still read as two pieces of real stone rather than two moulded shades.
The honest limit is water. Alabaster is a soft gypsum stone, so it stays out of the splash zones, the room is ventilated, and it is cleaned with a dry cloth. Within those rules it is a quiet, lasting choice.
choosing alabaster bathroom lighting.
- Position: outside the electrician's zones 0, 1 and 2, which cover the inside of the bath or shower, the space directly above them, and about 60 cm (24 in) beyond their edges. The vanity wall is usually well clear.
- Height: centre mirror sconces 150 to 165 cm (59 to 65 in) from the floor, roughly at eye level, one each side of the mirror. Allow for projection; the Essenzo Dome projects 20 cm.
- Count: two sconces for a single basin; three, or two tall columns, for a double vanity.
- Pendants: only where nobody stands beneath, such as over a freestanding dressing table or in a powder room, with the bottom above 2.1 m (7 ft) in any walkway.
- Colour temperature: 2700K as standard; 3000K if you want a slightly cleaner read for make-up. Ask for CRI 90+ and dimming.
- Finish: match the taps. The Aura Wall Mount offers Polished and Brushed Nickel as well as brass and champagne gold; the Halo Rifflesio offers Matte White, Brushed Brass, Antique Brass, Champagne Gold and Matte Black.
- Ventilation: an extract fan that runs after the shower, and a dry cloth for condensation.
the pieces.
The Essenzo Dome Wall Sconce is the mirror light: 27 cm high, 12 cm wide, 20 cm projection, satin brass, one E27 lamp up to 25 W at 2700K, hardwired. A pair at 150 to 165 cm either side of the mirror is the classic arrangement, and the lamp is simple to replace.
The Aura Wall Mount is a disc of alabaster that glows against the wall. It is the choice for a nickel bathroom, with Polished Nickel and Brushed Nickel among its finishes, and it reads as a soft halo rather than a fitting.
The Alabaster Linea Wall Mount is a slender vertical column cut from a single block. It lights the face along its full height and fits the narrow strip between a mirror and a side wall.
The Halo Rifflesio Wall Mount, a 30 cm ring of lit stone, and its larger relation the Vanta Halo Riflessio are made to order and suit a dressing room or powder room wall that wants one sculptural form. For a pendant away from water, the Lunar Pendant is a hand-carved sphere of 20 or 25 cm.
specifying and ordering.
The Essenzo Dome Wall Sconce, Aura Wall Mount, Linea Wall Mount and Lunar Pendant are ready to order online, with finishes chosen on the product page; finishes vary by piece. The Halo wall rings are made to order by enquiry. Light is 2700K on most pieces, with dimming on request, and the Essenzo Dome takes a standard E27 lamp. Lead time is typically 3 to 4 weeks and pieces ship worldwide from India.
Have the installation done by an electrician who confirms the zone requirements for your bathroom. Interior designers can request drawings and material samples through the Trade Programme, and a dressing room or suite that wants a piece developed to its dimensions can start with Bespoke. Care is simple and set out on the care page: a soft dry or lightly damp cloth, nothing else.
frequently asked questions.
Can alabaster lights be used in a bathroom?
Yes, in the dry area: flanking the mirror, at the vanity, over a dressing table or in a powder room. Keep them out of the zones inside and directly above the bath and shower and about 60 cm beyond their edges, have an electrician confirm the installation, and ventilate the room.
How high should sconces be either side of a bathroom mirror?
Centre them 150 to 165 cm (59 to 65 in) from the finished floor so the light sits at eye level and falls evenly on both sides of the face. Place them just outside the mirror edges, typically 90 to 110 cm apart for a single basin, and allow for the sconce projection against the vanity.
Will steam and humidity damage the stone?
Steam itself does not, but condensation that sits and dries on alabaster will mark it over time. Run the extract fan during and after showers, wipe any water beads off with a dry soft cloth, and never use bathroom cleaners, limescale removers or sprays on or near the stone.
Which colour temperature is best at a bathroom mirror?
2700K for warm, flattering light that suits both skin and alabaster. Choose 3000K if you want a slightly cleaner read for make-up. Avoid cooler lamps, which turn the stone grey. Ask for CRI 90 or above and have the circuit dimmed so the room can be low at night.
Are the bathroom pieces ready to order?
The Essenzo Dome Wall Sconce, Aura Wall Mount, Alabaster Linea Wall Mount and Lunar Pendant can be ordered online with the finish chosen on the page. The Halo Rifflesio and Vanta Halo Riflessio wall rings are made to order by enquiry. Lead time is typically 3 to 4 weeks, shipped worldwide.
