the range.
View all All LightingAlabaster lighting can be used in humid and coastal Indian homes when it stays indoors, in a ventilated room, away from splash zones and open balconies. Alabaster is gypsum, which is slightly soluble in water, so steady damp and salty air are the risks. Teeshaa's warranty does not cover water or humidity damage.
key facts.
- Alabaster is gypsum, which is slightly soluble in water, at roughly 2 grams per litre.
- Keep alabaster lighting away from bath and shower splash zones and from open balconies.
- Indoor rooms with moving air, such as bedrooms and living rooms, are the lowest-risk places.
- Teeshaa's one-year warranty against manufacturing defects excludes water and humidity damage.
why does humidity matter for alabaster?
Humidity matters because alabaster is a water-soluble stone. Gypsum dissolves at about 2 to 2.5 grams per litre of water, and conservation sources note that polished alabaster is vulnerable to moisture, which can leave it dull and opaque.
A damp room does not dissolve a lamp. The concern is repeated, long exposure: damp air that never clears, condensation that settles on the surface, or splashes that dry as marks. In a coastal city the air can also carry salt, which settles as a film on stone and metal and should be wiped off with a dry cloth.
is monsoon humidity a problem for alabaster lighting?
It can be, mainly in rooms that stay closed for weeks. In an air-conditioned or well-ventilated room, monsoon air is manageable. In a shut-up flat with no airflow, damp can build up on every surface.
Keep the room ventilated, run air-conditioning or a dehumidifier when the home is occupied, and let fans move air across the space. If a home is left empty through the monsoon, ask someone to open and air it, and do not seal a piece in plastic while the air is damp, because trapped moisture can make matters worse.
where in a humid home is alabaster lighting safe?
Bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms with moving air are the safest places. Keep alabaster away from bath and shower splash zones and from open balconies, as Teeshaa advises. Treat the other locations in the table as guidance and ask the studio when in doubt.
| Location | Risk | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom with air-conditioning or fan | Low | Suitable. Wall lights and table lamps suit the bedside. |
| Living room | Low | Suitable. Keep windows closed in heavy rain if the light sits near them. |
| Dining room | Low | Suitable. Keep it clear of steam from serving. |
| Kitchen island | Moderate | Keep away from the hob and wipe away cooking steam and oil with a dry cloth. Use good extraction. |
| Bathroom vanity | High | Only outside splash zones. Read the guide to alabaster lighting in a bathroom first. |
| Covered balcony or sit-out | High | Avoid unless the studio has confirmed the position. Sea breeze and rain spray reach it. |
| Open balcony or terrace | Not suitable | Keep alabaster away from open balconies. |
what does the warranty say about humidity?
Every Teeshaa light carries a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects, covering the whole light. The warranty does not cover physical damage, water or humidity damage, or damage caused by an installation done by anyone other than Teeshaa's team.
So in a humid or coastal home, placement is your protection. Customers may use their own electrician, but any damage caused by that installation then falls outside the warranty.
what should I do if I see damp marks or a film on the stone?
Switch the light off at the wall, let the area dry and wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth. Do not scrub, and do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
If the stone looks dull or cloudy in a patch, or if there is any moisture near the canopy or wiring, leave the light off and contact the studio with a photograph. For wiring or a ceiling fixing, use a licensed electrician. The routine for everyday cleaning is in how to clean and care for alabaster lighting.
how Teeshaa fits.
Teeshaa makes sculptural lighting in Spanish alabaster, a naturally translucent stone. Design is led from Bangalore, and the stonework, metalwork, engineering and assembly happen in Teeshaa's own facilities in India. Suspensions are typically stainless-steel rod cut to size or stainless wire with a transparent cable, and metal finishes vary by piece.
For a coastal bedroom, the Alabaster Linea Wall Mount and the Pebble Lamp are bedside options, and the Lunar Pendant suits a dry living area. See bedroom lighting and alabaster lighting for Mumbai for context, the care page for upkeep, and the bathroom guide for wet rooms. The full range is under alabaster lighting.
frequently asked questions.
Can alabaster lights be used in humid or coastal Indian homes?
Yes, indoors, in a ventilated room and away from splash zones and open balconies. Alabaster is gypsum, which is slightly soluble in water, so keep it dry and clear of condensation. The Teeshaa warranty excludes water and humidity damage, so careful placement is important.
Will monsoon humidity damage an alabaster chandelier?
Normal monsoon humidity in a ventilated or air-conditioned room is manageable. Risk rises in closed rooms where damp air never clears, or where condensation settles on the stone. Keep air moving, use air-conditioning or a dehumidifier, and wipe any film with a dry cloth.
Can I use alabaster lighting on a balcony or terrace?
Keep alabaster away from open balconies. Rain, spray, sun and sea air are too much for a soft, water-soluble stone. A covered balcony is still high risk, so ask the studio before choosing a position there.
Does salt air affect alabaster lighting?
Salt can settle as a thin film on stone and metal in coastal cities. Wipe it off with a soft, dry cloth, without scrubbing or using harsh chemicals. Keep the room ventilated, because a persistent damp, salty atmosphere is harder on any fitting than a dry one.
Is humidity damage covered by the Teeshaa warranty?
No. The one-year warranty covers manufacturing defects across the whole light. It does not cover physical damage, water or humidity damage, or damage caused by an installation done by anyone other than Teeshaa's team. Placement and ventilation are therefore the main protection.
