Diwali Lighting Ideas for the Home

warm, layered indoor light for the festival, from the entrance to the mandir corner, and how to keep it safe.

  • Spanish alabaster, selected and matched
  • Designed in Bangalore, made in India
  • Finishes and drop set to the room
  • Typically 3 to 4 weeks, shipped worldwide

For Diwali lighting at home, layer warm light instead of relying on fairy lights alone: a lit entrance, a soft glow in the living and dining areas, and low accent lamps near the mandir corner. Use 2000K to 2700K, put lamps on dimmers, keep alabaster lighting off open balconies, and keep every diya a safe distance from fixtures.

key facts.

  • Warm light between 2000K and 2700K suits the festival, because it is close to the amber of a flame and flatters brass, silk and flowers.
  • Layers look richer than one bright source: low lamps, wall lights and a dimmed centre light together.
  • Alabaster is not for open balconies or splash zones, so keep it indoors or in covered, dry spots.
  • Candle fire guidance is to keep candles at least 12 inches (about 30 cm) away from anything that burns; treat a diya as an open flame in the same way.
  • Made-to-order Teeshaa pieces typically take 3 to 4 weeks, so enquire early for any piece you want in place for the festival.

how do you light a home for diwali beyond fairy lights?

Light the places people look at, not the whole room evenly. Fairy lights and diyas give sparkle, but a home also needs a steady, warm base so the sparkle has something to sit against.

Build that base with lamps at different heights, a dimmed centre light, and wall lights at the entrance. Switch off or dim the harsh overhead light while the festive lights are on, because a bright tube light flattens the whole effect. Dimming is available on request on Teeshaa pieces, so ask when you order.

which spaces should you light, and how?

Start at the door and move inwards. The table gives one idea and one caution for each space.

Space Idea Note
Entrance and door A warm wall light or a table lamp on a console so rangoli, torans and the doorway are lit from the side. Keep alabaster indoors or under cover, and away from the weather.
Living room Dim the centre light, then add two or three table lamps at different heights. Keep lamp cables tidy and away from guests walking through.
Dining area Dim the pendant or chandelier for the festive meal and add a low lamp on the sideboard. Keep candles and diyas on the table well below the fixture.
Mandir or pooja corner Soft accent light on the shelf, with the diya area kept clear of fixtures. See lighting for a home mandir or pooja room. Keep the flame distance in mind when hanging garlands.
Balcony and terrace Use lights made for outdoor use only. Alabaster is not for open balconies; moisture and weather can damage it.
Staircase and foyer Warm light on the landing and a lit wall near the stairs. See foyer chandelier. Light steps clearly; avoid dark patches where guests step.

what colour temperature suits festive lighting?

Use 2000K to 2700K. At 2000K the glow is deep amber and closest to a flame, which suits an evening gathering. At 2700K the light is the familiar warm white that works across the home.

Most Teeshaa pieces use integrated LED at 2700K, and several offer 2000K, 2300K or 3000K, so check the product page. Light above 3000K can look harsh against festive colours. The page on colour temperature for alabaster lighting compares the options.

how do you keep festive lighting safe?

Keep every open flame away from fixtures, cables, curtains and decorations. A public fire-service page advises keeping candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns, blowing them out when you leave the room or go to bed, and using battery-operated flameless candles as an alternative. A diya is also an open flame, so the same logic applies.

Do not hang garlands or fabric over lamps, and do not overload extension boards with several sets of string lights. Use a licensed electrician for any new wiring. Clean alabaster only with a soft, dry or lightly damp cloth, because soot and oil from lamps can settle on nearby surfaces.

when should you order for the festival?

Enquire early. Made-to-order pieces typically take 3 to 4 weeks, and ready-to-order pieces still depend on delivery timelines, which are indicative. Teeshaa does not state a festival date or promise a delivery day.

how teeshaa fits.

Table lamps are the easiest way to add festive glow. The Totem Table Lamp is 49 cm tall, and the Essenzo Dot Table Lamp and Pebble Lamp are ready to order. The Aura Wall Mount and Essenzo Dome Wall Sconce light an entrance wall, and the 60 cm Small Halo Crown Chandelier is ready to order for a dining zone.

Browse the alabaster table lamps, read the entrance lighting guide or return to the alabaster lighting hub. If you are choosing a present, see luxury housewarming gift lamps.

frequently asked questions.

What are good Diwali lighting ideas for the home?

Layer warm light rather than using fairy lights alone. Light the entrance with a wall light or console lamp, dim the centre light in the living and dining areas, add low table lamps, and keep soft accent light by the mandir corner. Use 2000K to 2700K.

What colour light suits Diwali decoration?

Warm light between 2000K and 2700K suits the festival. At 2000K the glow is deep amber and closest to a flame. At 2700K it is the familiar warm white. Light cooler than 3000K tends to look harsh against festive colours and fabrics.

Can I use alabaster lights on a balcony for Diwali?

No. Alabaster should stay away from open balconies, splash zones and bath or shower areas because moisture and weather can damage the stone. Use lights made for outdoor use on the balcony, and keep Teeshaa pieces indoors or in covered, dry spaces.

How far should diyas be from light fixtures?

Fire-service guidance says to keep candles at least 12 inches (about 30 cm) from anything that burns. Treat a diya as an open flame in the same way, and keep more distance from cables, curtains, garlands and fabric. Never leave a lit diya unattended.

How early should I order a light for Diwali?

Enquire early. Made-to-order pieces typically take 3 to 4 weeks, and ready-to-order pieces still depend on delivery timelines, which are indicative. Teeshaa does not promise a festival delivery date, so contact the studio with the date you need and ask what is ready to order.
