How Bright Is Alabaster Lighting? Watts, Lumens and Layers

how much light an alabaster fixture gives, what the watts really mean, and where to add task light.

  • Spanish alabaster, selected and matched
  • Designed in Bangalore, made in India
  • Finishes and drop set to the room
  • Typically 3 to 4 weeks, shipped worldwide

Teeshaa alabaster lighting is bright enough to set the mood of a room, but it is a diffused ambient and accent source, not a task light. The stone scatters and absorbs part of the light, so a glowing piece reads softer than a clear fixture of the same wattage. Add discreet downlights where you read or cook.

key facts.

  • Watts measure the electrical power a light draws, while lumens measure the visible light it gives out.
  • Alabaster is naturally translucent, so it shows a soft glow rather than a hard point of light.
  • The Totem Table Lamp, 49 cm tall, uses an 8 W LED strip, and the Aura suspensions are listed at 12 W to 20 W.
  • Most Teeshaa pieces use integrated LED at 2700K, and dimming is available on request.
  • Alabaster is not a task light, so pair it with discreet downlights where you read or cook.

what do watts and lumens measure?

Watts are the electrical power a fixture draws. Lumens are the visible light it produces, weighted by how sensitive the human eye is to each colour.

The two used to move together, because old filament bulbs turned a similar share of power into light. LEDs do not. The link between them is efficacy, measured in lumens per watt, and it differs from one LED to the next. This is why brightness is now quoted in lumens: a lamp sold as a 60 W equivalent must give at least about 800 lumens under the EU standard, whatever its real wattage.

So an 8 W LED strip and a 20 W LED module cannot be compared on watts alone. Watts tell you the power and the heat load. Lumens tell you the light.

does alabaster make a light look dimmer?

Alabaster softens a light more than it dims it. The stone passes some light, scatters some and absorbs the rest, so the LED behind it reaches the room as an even glow.

That has two effects. First, the surface looks calm and has little glare, so you can sit near it comfortably. Second, a piece wrapped in stone puts less light into the room than the same LED left bare. How much less depends on the thickness, clouding and veining of that block, which differ from stone to stone. Teeshaa reviews the stone both unlit and lit, and matches the sections of multi-part pieces for colour, clouding and transmission.

how much light do Teeshaa pieces give?

The wattage is a power rating, not a lumen figure. Light sources vary by piece: the Totem Table Lamp uses an 8 W LED strip, and the Aura suspensions, such as the Alabaster Aura Suspension, are listed at 12 W to 20 W.

If you need a lumen output for a lighting calculation, ask the studio whether a figure is available for the exact piece and configuration. Before an order, the team reviews scale, drop, sightlines and output, so this is a normal question. Do not work from the wattage alone.

is alabaster bright enough to light a whole room?

Usually it carries the mood of a room rather than the whole job. In a small bedroom, one piece on a dimmer can be enough for the evening. In a living room, dining room or kitchen, treat the alabaster as the main glow and add other layers around it.

space what the alabaster piece does what to add
living room sets the main ambient glow over the seating wall lights or table lamps for the edges, a reading lamp where someone reads
dining table gives a warm pool of light over the table low-level or wall light at the room edges, on a dimmer
kitchen island adds a soft, social light over the island discreet downlights over the worktop and hob
bedroom provides the calm evening light a reading light at each side of the bed, downlights near wardrobes
corridor or stair marks the route with a gentle glow enough light to see the floor and steps clearly

how can you judge brightness before you buy?

Start from how you use the room, then test the answer against real conditions. A few checks help:

  1. Note which tasks happen in the room after dark, such as reading, cooking, homework or dressing.
  2. Compare the wattage of your current fixture with the piece you like, but ask the studio about output if the room is large.
  3. Decide whether you want the piece on a dimmer. Dimming is available on request, so ask when you enquire.
  4. See the stone lit, if you can. The studio is a design studio and workshop in Bangalore, and visits are by appointment. There is no showroom.

how Teeshaa fits.

Teeshaa makes sculptural alabaster lighting, designed in Bangalore and made in its own facilities in India. Most pieces use integrated LED at 2700K, and several offer 2000K, 2300K or 3000K. For a living room, see the living room chandeliers, the Aura Chandelier or the Halo Crown Chandelier. For a table, look at the Essenzo Pendant or the Alabaster Linea Pendant, and see kitchen island pendant lights for work surfaces. The full range is on the alabaster lighting hub. frequently asked questions.

Is alabaster lighting bright enough to read by?

Not on its own. Alabaster gives a soft, diffused glow that suits conversation and mood, not close work. Where you read, cook or work, add a dedicated task light such as a discreet downlight or a reading lamp, and use the alabaster piece as the ambient layer.

How many lumens does an alabaster pendant give?

There is no single figure. Output depends on the piece, the LED, the configuration and the thickness and clouding of the stone. Wattages such as 8 W or 12 W to 20 W are power ratings, not lumens. Ask the Teeshaa studio whether an output figure is available for the exact piece you are considering.

Does a higher wattage mean a brighter alabaster light?

Within the same kind of LED, more watts usually means more light, but LED efficiency varies, and the stone changes how much light escapes. Lumens are the better measure of brightness, while watts show the power drawn. Compare lumens where you can, and wattage only as a rough guide.

Can I dim an alabaster light to make it softer?

Yes, dimming is available on request on Teeshaa pieces. Product pages list dimming as on request, so mention it when you enquire. That lets one fixture serve for daytime, dinner and late evening. Confirm the dimmer type with the studio before any wiring is done.

Can alabaster lights replace downlights in a living room?

They can carry most of the ambient light in a living room, but not every task. Keep discreet downlights or a lamp where you read or cook. Used together on separate switches or dimmers, the alabaster piece sets the mood and the downlights handle the work.
