Installing an Alabaster Chandelier on a False Ceiling

what to settle with your electrician and the studio before a false ceiling is closed.

  • Spanish alabaster, selected and matched
  • Designed in Bangalore, made in India
  • Finishes and drop set to the room
  • Typically 3 to 4 weeks, shipped worldwide

An alabaster chandelier on a false ceiling should be supported from the structural slab above, not from the false-ceiling board, with its weight confirmed by the studio and the work done by a licensed electrician. Settle the fixing point, canopy, driver position and finished ceiling height before the false ceiling is closed.

key facts.

  • A false ceiling hangs below the structural slab, so the support for a heavy fixture should be planned back to the structure, with structural advice where needed.
  • Apartment ceilings are commonly 2.7 to 3.0 m, and a false-ceiling cove often takes 20 to 30 cm, so measure the finished ceiling, not the slab.
  • Teeshaa drivers can sit in the canopy or remotely, and product pages state which.
  • Suspension is typically stainless-steel rod cut to size, or stainless wire with transparent cable.
  • The warranty does not cover damage caused by an installation done by anyone other than Teeshaa's team.

why does a false ceiling change how a chandelier is installed?

Because the false ceiling is not the structure. It is a lighter layer that hangs below the slab, so it should not be assumed to carry a chandelier.

A dropped ceiling is described as hung below the main structural ceiling and suspended from the overhead structure. A chandelier is a concentrated load at a single point, often with a driver and canopy attached. The support therefore needs a route back to the structure. How that is done depends on your building, the ceiling construction and the weight of the piece. That is a decision for a licensed electrician and, where the load or the slab is in doubt, for a structural engineer or the building's consultant. This page gives the principles, not a method.

what should you plan before the false ceiling is closed?

Most problems come from decisions made after the board is up. Settle these items while the slab is still open to view:

item what to settle who decides
fixing point exact position over the table or seating, and a support that reaches the structure electrician, with structural advice where needed
weight the weight of the exact piece and configuration the studio, on request
finished height ceiling height after the cove, boards and paint you and the contractor
drop rod or wire length to the bottom edge, from the table top or floor the studio, with you
canopy and cut-out canopy size against the opening in the board the studio and contractor
driver in the canopy, or remote in a place you can reach the studio and electrician
dimming whether you want it, and the dimmer type the studio, before wiring
access a way to reach the driver and wiring later electrician and contractor

how much height do you lose to the cove?

Usually 20 to 30 cm in the cove area, so always work from the finished ceiling. The slab height on your plan is not the height you will hang from.

Here is an illustration. Assume a finished ceiling of 2.7 m and a table top 75 cm from the floor. Pendants hang with the bottom 75 to 90 cm above the table, so a bottom edge about 80 cm above the table sits near 1.55 m from the floor. The total drop, including the canopy, is then about 1.15 m. The Linea Pendant is 30 cm tall and 6 cm wide, with a drop on a stainless rod up to about 178 cm, so check the drop you need against the product page. For heights over a table, see the pendant height guide.

where does the driver go?

A driver is the unit that converts mains power to the low-voltage current the LED needs. On Teeshaa pieces it can sit in the canopy or remotely, and product pages show "Driver: In-canopy" or "Driver: Remote".

An in-canopy driver sits at the ceiling, so ask the studio what the canopy needs and plan the opening to suit. A remote driver means a cable run to a separate box, which needs a place that stays accessible without breaking the ceiling. Either way, confirm the choice with the studio before the electrician runs cables. If you want dimming, the dimmer type also depends on the driver. The details are in dimming and drivers for alabaster lighting.

who should install it, and what does the warranty say?

A licensed electrician should do the wiring and fixing, with structural advice where the load or slab is in question. You may use your own electrician, or ask the studio about installation by Teeshaa's team.

Every Teeshaa light carries a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects, covering the whole light. It does not cover physical damage, water or humidity damage, or damage caused by an installation done by anyone other than Teeshaa's team. If you use your own electrician, the installation then sits outside that cover. Ask the studio whether the Teeshaa team can install at your address.

On the day, work in this order:

  1. Check the package on arrival and report visible damage within 48 hours.
  2. Keep the stone away from dust and damp until the ceiling work is finished.
  3. Have the electrician isolate the power before any connection.
  4. Hang, level and connect the piece, handling the stone sections gently.
  5. Test the light, then keep the care guide supplied with the piece.

how Teeshaa fits.

Teeshaa makes sculptural alabaster lighting, designed in Bangalore and made in its own facilities in India. The Aura Chandelier is about 100 cm wide and 91 cm high, and the Halo Crown Chandelier comes in rings of 60 to 120 cm. Larger formats are made to order on enquiry. Before an order, the team reviews scale, drop, sightlines, output, suspension and access. Trade members can request technical drawings, dimensions, weights and electrical information against an active project through the trade programme. See living room chandeliers, foyer chandeliers and the main alabaster lighting page. If a fan shares the room, read chandelier with a ceiling fan.

frequently asked questions.

Can a false ceiling hold an alabaster chandelier?

Do not assume it can. A false ceiling hangs below the structural slab, and a chandelier is a concentrated load. The support should be planned back to the structure by a licensed electrician, with structural advice where the load or slab is in doubt, and the studio should confirm the weight of the exact piece.

How much ceiling height do I lose to a false ceiling?

A false-ceiling cove often takes 20 to 30 cm. Apartment ceilings are commonly 2.7 to 3.0 m at the slab, so the finished height is lower. Always measure the finished ceiling, after boards and paint, and calculate the drop from that figure.

Where does the driver go on a Teeshaa chandelier?

It depends on the piece. Product pages show Driver: In-canopy or Driver: Remote. An in-canopy driver sits at the ceiling end of the piece, while a remote driver is placed elsewhere and needs an accessible location. Confirm the choice with the studio before wiring starts.

Can my own electrician install a Teeshaa chandelier?

Yes, you may use your own electrician. The warranty does not cover damage caused by an installation done by anyone other than Teeshaa's team, so the installation then sits outside that cover. Ask the studio whether the Teeshaa team can install at your address.

When should I plan the chandelier in a new false ceiling?

Before the false ceiling is closed. Settle the fixing point, canopy and driver position, dimming, access and finished height while the slab is still visible. Changing the support or the wiring after the boards and paint are done is harder and more expensive.
