Specifying Decorative Lighting for Residential Projects
a specification checklist for architects and interior designers, with alabaster lighting made in India and shipped worldwide.
- Spanish alabaster, selected and matched
- Designed in Bangalore, made in India
- Finishes and drop set to the room
- Typically 3 to 4 weeks, shipped worldwide
To specify decorative lighting for a residential project, fix the finished ceiling height, the drop, the sightlines, the light output, the suspension and the access before choosing a form. For Teeshaa alabaster lighting, add finish, colour temperature, dimming, driver location, lead time and a sample request to the same checklist.
key facts.
- Teeshaa's trade programme is open to architects, interior designers, lighting consultants, developers and contractors.
- Approved members can request technical drawings, dimensions, weights, finishes, lead times, electrical information and samples against an active project.
- Before an order, the team reviews scale, drop, sightlines, output, suspension and access.
- Most pieces use integrated LED at 2700K, several offer 2000K, 2300K or 3000K, and dimming is available on request.
- Made-to-order pieces are typically 3 to 4 weeks; larger formats and some sizes are made to order on enquiry.
what should a decorative lighting specification include?
It should name the room, the finished ceiling height, the fitting, its size and drop, the finish, the colour temperature, the dimming method, the driver location and the delivery date. Each item is one line in a schedule, and each has a question that someone must answer before ordering.
Treat the decorative fitting as one layer of the plan. Alabaster is a diffused source, not a task light, so the specification should also name discreet downlights wherever someone reads or cooks. The room-by-room villa lighting plan shows how the layers sit together.
how do you fix ceiling height, drop and sightlines?
Measure the finished ceiling, not the slab. A false ceiling lowers the usable height, and a cove often takes 20 to 30 cm. Apartment ceilings are commonly 2.7 to 3.0 m (about 9 to 10 ft).
Then set the drop from the line of sight. Over a dining table or island, hang a pendant with its bottom 75 to 90 cm above the surface. Over a table, keep a chandelier to between one half and two thirds of the table width. For a whole room, chandelier diameter in inches is roughly the room length plus width in feet. Tall voids need their own treatment, set out in lighting a double-height space.
how do you specify output, colour temperature and dimming?
State the colour temperature and the dimming requirement in the schedule, because both are choices rather than defaults. Most Teeshaa pieces use integrated LED at 2700K, and several offer 2000K, 2300K or 3000K.
Product pages list "Dimming: On request", so the dimming need must be raised at specification stage, not at the electrical first fix. Confirm the dimmer type with the studio before any wiring is done. Light sources and wattage vary by piece: the Totem table lamp 49 cm tall uses an 8 W LED strip, and the Aura suspensions run from 12 W to 20 W.
what do suspension, drivers and access mean on site?
Suspension is typically a stainless-steel rod cut to size or stainless wire with transparent cable. The driver, which powers the LED, can sit in the canopy or remotely. A remote driver needs a reachable place, so access for service belongs in the drawing.
Support is a structural question. A fixing should reach the structure, not the false-ceiling board. Ask the studio for the weight of the piece and confirm the fixing with a structural engineer and a licensed electrician.
how do lead time, samples and returns affect the programme?
Put the lead time on the programme. Product pages state it, and made-to-order pieces are typically 3 to 4 weeks. Request samples early: trade members can ask for alabaster and finish samples against an active project, which lets the client see the clouding and veining before the order.
Custom-made, made-to-order and specially commissioned pieces are not eligible for returns, exchanges or refunds. Damage in transit or a manufacturing defect must be reported within 48 hours of delivery with clear photographs or videos. The one-year warranty covers manufacturing defects in the whole light, not physical damage, water or humidity damage.
| specification item | question to resolve | who answers |
|---|---|---|
| Finished ceiling height | What is the height after the false ceiling, not the slab? | Architect or site team |
| Drop | How far below the ceiling should the bottom of the piece hang? | Designer, from the sightline |
| Sightlines | What is seen from seating, the stair landing and the entrance? | Designer |
| Size | Does the diameter suit the table width or the room length plus width? | Designer with the studio |
| Light output | Is a task layer of downlights needed beside the alabaster? | Lighting consultant |
| Colour temperature | Is 2700K enough, or is 2000K, 2300K or 3000K needed? | Designer |
| Dimming | Which dimmer type, and is it requested with the order? | Electrician with the studio |
| Driver location | In the canopy or remote, and where can it be reached? | Electrician |
| Suspension and support | Rod or wire, what is the weight, and where does the fixing land? | Structural engineer, studio |
| Finish | Which metal finish suits the hardware in the room? | Designer; check the product page |
| Lead time | When must the order be placed to meet handover? | Project manager with the studio |
| Samples | Have the stone and finish been approved? | Designer and client |
how Teeshaa fits a residential specification.
Teeshaa designs from Bangalore and makes in its own facilities in India. The trade programme gives specifiers drawings, weights and samples, and the bespoke service develops original pieces for private residences. The alabaster lighting guide maps the whole range.
Useful starting points: the Halo Crown Chandelier in rings from 60 to 120 cm, the Alabaster Linea Pendant on a drop of up to about 178 cm, the Aura Wall Mount for corridors, and the Totem Table Lamp. For tall voids, see large-format alabaster chandeliers. The design studio and workshop in Bangalore can be visited by appointment; there is no showroom.
frequently asked questions.
Who can join the Teeshaa trade programme?
The trade programme is for architects, interior designers, lighting consultants, developers, contractors, hospitality and retail buyers, and dealers. You apply online. Applications are usually reviewed within 1 to 2 business days, and approved members see trade pricing on product pages when signed in.
What can a specifier request from Teeshaa for a project?
Against an active project, trade members can request technical drawings, dimensions, weights, finishes, lead times and electrical information, plus alabaster and finish samples. Before an order, the team reviews scale, drop, sightlines, output, suspension and access. Project-specific adaptations and bespoke commissions are also available.
Can a Teeshaa light be adapted for a particular home?
Yes. Teeshaa offers project-specific adaptations and original bespoke commissions developed from the architecture, the material and the way the room is used. Because adapted and commissioned pieces are custom-made, they are not eligible for returns, exchanges or refunds, so confirm the brief before ordering.
Should Teeshaa or the site electrician install the light?
Either can be arranged. A client may use their own electrician, but the one-year warranty does not cover damage caused by an installation done by anyone other than Teeshaa's team. Whoever installs, a licensed electrician should handle the wiring, and structural advice should confirm the fixing.
How early should decorative lighting be specified?
Early enough that ceiling heights, cove depths, fixing points and driver locations are settled before ceilings are closed. Made-to-order pieces are typically 3 to 4 weeks, and larger formats are quoted on enquiry, so the lead time should sit on the programme alongside the electrical first fix.
